Rio’s Mosteiro de São Bento was founded in 1590 by two Portuguese monks who had arrived from Bahia twenty-four years after the city’s foundation. It was the second religious order to establish a home in Rio de Janeiro, with the Benedictines being preceded only by the Jesuits. In 1596 the Monastery was already consolidated, in an appropriate place, where it still stands.

On Sundays, at 10:00 am, the famous mass with Gregorian chants is celebrated. The monastery is approximately an 8-minute walk from the Belga Hotel.
